Town Garden

This garden was designed to complement a 1930s house, the clients were not so keen on Art Deco so we looked at other trends during the 1930s and decided on a Bauhaus inspired look. This was done by looking at the buildings and art of this time and using the simple lines and squares that often appeared then. Once the overall theme had been chosen this was then broken down into how the garden was going to be used, a main raised terrace for relaxing and entertaining friends and family, a smaller secluded seating area and a dining/barbecue area. Also key was including a garden room, to allow for storage (since there was no garage with the house) and space to enjoy the garden in less inclement weather.

Lighting was added to the steps, to be able to walk up and down the garden as the light fades along with wall lights just outside the kitchen diner and three spike mounted spot lights were added to the three birches to light the focal points within the garden.

Hedging was added along the boundaries to maintain privacy whilst sat out on the raised terrace and to reduce the impact of the amount of fencing along the long lengths of the garden. Multi-stem trees were used to tie in with the existing birch tree in the garden, to provide privacy (when looking down the side of the house from the road) and architectural interest. The clients preferred colour palette was taken into consideration, of whites, lilacs, purples and a hint of deep red. With planting to provide year round interest in the garden.
