Country Garden

The clients were after a garden that tied in with the grade II listed house, both in terms of feel and hard landscaping materials. There still need to be enough lawn for the dog to run around and space for the whole family to use. The terrace was currently positioned in the shadiest area of the garden in the evening (this was the main time the family were likely to use the garden), so it needed to moving towards to house both in terms of practicality when eating (bringing food out from the kitchen and barbecuing) and being able to enjoy the last of the evening sun. There was also a desire for an additional covered seating area within the garden amongst all the planting that could be enjoyed even if it is raining.

A lighting scheme was incorporated into the garden to be able to enjoy it on summer evenings as the light started to fade. Low level lighting was incorporated around the two main seating areas, the dining area and the cover area for drinks. Two uplighters were placed by each tree in the centre of the two circular borders.

They liked the idea of cottage style planting, lots of colour without the high level of maintenance that it entails. Their preferred colour palette was purples and pinks with a few pops of dark red and white. The terrace and additional seating areas were paved in porcelain, in a colour that tied in with the steps leading up to the house and brick edging to tie in with the house was used between the borders and the lawn. Where possible existing shrubs (particularly the yew pyramids and the mature trees and hedging) were used as part of the scheme with additional topiary and perennials to provide year round colour and interest.
